The best advice when it comes to golf swing basics is to always try your best to keep things as simple as possible. The golf swing movement is not a natural movement for the human body and it is the one aspect of the game that looks so simple and yet causes a golfer so much trouble. One of the things that many people do is to desperately read every single golf tip that they can get their hands on. The result is that the golf swing for most people is complicated by too much thought and focusing on many different tips that have been taken in. So the disastrous outcome should not be a surprise to anybody.
It is not a bad idea to read tips and coaching advice from professionals; however it is important that you stick to the basics, whatever you do.
The basics of the golf swing starts with the backswing. The common mistaken approach many folks have here is to believe that a backswing starts with the hands. Actually it starts with the arms. Allow the left shoulder and hips to turn as naturally as possible to allow the weight to shift smoothly to the right side. Be careful not to over-swing at the top as this will spoil your shot. Over-swinging at the top will also tend to cause slower club speed and thus less distance in your drive.
Then we come to the downswing. The temptation for many golfers here is to apply all the strength that they can master. What follows as a result of this is a sliced shot or the ball heading in a very different direction from what was intended. Just try and return the club head to the ball at maximum speed while your muscles are as relaxed as they possibly can be under these circumstances.
Some golfers do not think that the finish is that important but actually it is terribly significant. A good finish will be high, and certainly not low or to the left. You should end up with your right knee facing the exact place where your shot was supposed to go and your right foot up so that all your spikes are visible.
When you stick to these basics, it becomes much easier for you to absorb and take in coaching tips from professionals so that they improve your game rather than cause more confusion. A further word of caution is that it is advisable to take up one tip at a time and it should be carefully targeted at an area of your golf swing where you feel that there is a basic weakness that hinders your game.
